Artist Statement

The overall interpretation of what my paintings are is best described by a selection from the book, “What Painting Is” by James Elkins.

“But a painting is a painting, and not words describing the artist, or the place it was made, or the people who commissioned it. A painting is made of fluids and stone—and paint has its own logic and its own meanings even before it is shaped into the head of a Madonna. To an artist, a picture is both the sum of ideas and a blurry memory of “Pushing paints, breathing fumes, dripping oils and wiping brushes, smearing and diluting and mixing.”

This collection of paintings were inspired by the iconic images of The Texas Longhorn, The North American Bison, and The Raven. Each of these have a long history established in legend, myth, and reality. Each one has a connection to the Heavenly realm, which is why I endeavor to produce art that reflects the deepest part of my heart,   “On Earth as it is in Heaven.” This connection between our existence on Earth, as it reflects our Heavenly existence is best described as “Convergent Symbolism.”

“Convergent Symbolism,” as applied to my paintings, begins with my obsession with the dual existence of two realms: the physical, and the spiritual. The convergence or interaction of the two realms is where I find my inspiration for subject matter. The various motifs focus on timeless symbols that exist in both realms. Additionally, the method and approach to the pictorial process is integrated in the application of multiple layers of color, while leaving exposed areas that reductively reveal peeks into the convergence of the two realms. These paintings reflect the convergent symbolism as interpreted by my imagination.
